THE JAKARTA POST/JAKARTA
The Indonesian Internet society dubs him the "web evangelist" for his struggle to protect affordable Internet access in Indonesia.
The moniker suits Onno W. Purbo, 48, an IT writer and activist for Internet access, who says both his work and philosophy make him a champion for access to information.
The former civil servant who once worked as a lecturer at the prestigious Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) was recently awarded the Tasrif Award by the Independent Journalist Alliance (AJI) at the alliances 16th anniversary. The AJI honored his work in setting up RTRW-net, a community-based internet infrastructure making affordable Internet access possible for people in rural areas.
The award was the latest in a string of commendations recognizing Onnos work on the Internet Among them, he received the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award from the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations in 1997 and the Golden Award for Indonesian Telematics Figures by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce in 2000.
Onno views the AJI award as acknowledgement of what he and "the kids" - his nickname for internet actiNists - have achieved.

Penerjemah? Editor? Penerbit? Publik pembaca? Lalu apa yang perlu dilakukan?

Probably the most famous hacker of his generation, Mitnick has been described by the US Department of Justice as "the most wanted computer criminal in United States history." The self-styled 'hacker poster boy' allegedly hacked into the computer systems of some of the world's top technology and telecommunications companies including Nokia, Fujitsu and Motorola. After a highly publicised pursuit by the FBI, Mitnick was arrested in 1995 and after confessing to several charges as part of a plea-bargain agreement, he served a five year prison sentence. He was released on parole in 2000 and today runs a computer security consultancy. He didn't refer to his hacking activities as 'hacking' and instead called them 'social engineering'.
2. Kevin Poulson
Poulson first gained notoriety by hacking into the phone lines of Los Angeles radio station KIIS-FM, ensuring he would be the 102nd caller and thus the winner of a competition the station was running in which the prize was a Porsche. Under the hacker alias Dark Dante, he also reactivated old Yellow Page escort telephone numbers for an acquaintance that then ran a virtual escort agency. The authorities began pursuing Poulson in earnest after he hacked into a federal investigation database. Poulson even appeared on the US television Unsolved Mysteries as a fugitive – although all the 1-800 phone lines for the program mysteriously crashed. Since his release from prison, Poulson has reinvented himself as a journalist.

Narrative Analysis of Linkin Park’s “Hands Held High”
by Ben Stanton From Mason media critics United
For several years now I have been a fan of the band Linkin Park. They are quite popular and have been together for about fifteen years now and have come out with six major albums. They are very popular outside the United States as well. According to Wikipedia “They are the only musical act in the world that formed after the millennium to have sold over 50 million records worldwide.” Linkin Park has a unique music style combining the sounds of rock and rap. Most of their songs are upbeat and may have angry themes usually having to do with being fed up with something or some internal struggle. Until their latest albums, Linkin Park has never really come out with politically themed songs. Linkin park has always been involved with charities and been promoting causes. The band gets involved and often promotes things like equal treatment of all people but their music has never reflected any of that until their last couple albums.
The Album “Minutes to Midnight” was released in 2007. Not only did the album have a new more mature sound for the band, but for the first time they released a politically themed song. “Hands Held High” was written and sung by Mike Shinoda, Linkin Parks figure head. In the song, Shinoda rants about the war in Iraq and the Middle East. He expresses his dismay for the Bush administration and oil tycoons getting rich while average people in America cannot afford to put gas in their cars anymore.
The album was a huge success. “Hands Held High” was not considered one of the more popular songs on the album, however a lot of people loved it. People who enjoy politically themed music are now more attracted to Linkin Park’s music.
I am going to analyze the song “Hands Held High” using narrative analysis. I will look deep into Shinoda’s message and see how different narrative elements are used to motivate the audience to act. My goal is to answer the question: is relating closely to the audience a good way to motivate the audience to action? I will show how the story meets the standards or does not meet them. I will also take a closer look at the different themes in the song.
The album “Minutes to Midnight” was released in 2007. This was in the middle of Bush’s second term as President. Bush’s approval ratings were at an all time low. The war in Iraq was going on overseas. In America, gas prices were the highest they have ever been.People started losing jobs. The economy was failing. Linkin Park could not ignore this.

What is the meaning of NINDO?
Nindō (忍道; Literally meaning "Ninja Way") is a personal rule that each shinobi lives by. It is their way of ninja life, their motto or "dream". A ninja's nindō can be anything, no matter how immoral their personal point of view is. Most often Naruto Uzumaki proclaims his ninja way, to be: "I'm not gonna run away and I never go back on my word, that is my nindō! My ninja way!"[1] According to Madara Uchiha, the nindō of the Uchiha clan is to exact revenge against their hated enemies. Similarly, Hashirama Senju created what is known as the Will of Fire inKonohagakure, which can be said to be the universal ninja way of all the shinobi of this village.
Fun With Pun
Okay, this is my first thread in Fun With English forum
I want to play a game
the game require everyone to write a pun in every post
the rule is you have to bold every core of pun that you write
so people may be understand with your pun
btw, what's PUN?
as a thread starter, I will start first to make a pun as well as an example (1)
D=Detective
A=Assistant
D: What's the status of the victim?
A: The victim was electrocuted to death. He used to be a music teacher.
D: Well, looks like that our victim was a good conductor
(2) You want us to make puns, pine by me then, but some people would snap from reading hurricane of puns, maybe we should twig them a little bit, less pun per post, but don't make them too sappy, and people will start barking with hundreds or thousands of puns, horrible horrible puns, I hope this thread wouldn't make people went nuts, instead they'll take rootshere and knot looking for another topics.
In serious note, you should join Fark.com, they're hilarious and their puns are not just like hurricanes, it's more like tornadoes! You could take a spin there... oh wait

Okay, looks like I need to explain what pun is
according to Wikipedia, "pun is a form of word play which suggests two or more meanings, by exploiting multiple meanings of words, or of similar-sounding words, for an intended humorous or rhetorical effect."
So you use words that has double or more meaning.
And with your creativity, make something funny.
Still confused? Look at my example and words I bold-ed in
conductor means a person who leads a music orchestra
conductor also means things that able to pass on electricity
since the victim was a music teacher and died by electricity (human body can pass on an electricity) so he became a good conductor.
Hope you'll understand, and good luck with your pun

10.English Tips #10:Being Understood
If you're struggling to get someone to understand you, try the tips below:
* Speak more slowly (not louder!)
* Keep it simple. Use words that are most common. For example, if you want to say cat, don't use the word feline.
* Keep it simple. Use basic sentence structures (subject/verb/object).
* Don't worry about pronouns, instead use the names of people you are talking about.
* Use a lot of hand gestures. "Do you mean up?" Raise up your hands to help the person understand the word.
* Use sound effects. You may feel silly, but if you are trying to tell someone that something exploded, using the sound "Ka Boom!" will get your point across!

The Most Effective Method for Learning a Language Alone

Interested in learning a new language but don't have anyone to practice with? Multi-lingual writer Dave MacLeod explains the most effective method he's come up with for learning a new language using the free, open-source, and cross-platform audio application Audacity.
With all the posts on tips for learning languages, I thought I would write one on the method I always find to be by far the most effective at the intermediate level when one is studying alone (no teachers, no fluent speakers to chat with). This method is very simple: dictation, using paper and pen. Not typing.
Here's how it works.
Step 1: find something long in the target language you really enjoy. Hopefully a book by an author you like with corresponding text. News articles work as well though their scope tends to be rather limited (no colloquialisms, little first and second person, etc.). If you can't find something with matching text then in a pinch just going with audio will work, though you will end up with a lot of question marks on your paper as you come across bits and pieces that you just can't make out on your own no matter what. If this happens then you'll just have to skip to the next few seconds. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Because:

10 Signs of Happiness
Though it may come in different forms for different people, most human beings are in pursuit of the same thing: happiness. It may be closer than you imagined.
For some, happiness can be a pesky, fair-weathered friend, forever on the loose. The fact is that you have everything you need for happy living right now! Seeing it may simply be a matter of tweaking your own thinking so that you can appreciate what you’ve already got. Look for these signs and say hello to happiness!
1. You Live Your Life With Integrity
Living a life that’s in line with your own values and belief is important for happiness. “That means that the things you say you believe in are the things you do,” says “Happy Guy” David Leonhardt, the author of Climb Your Stairway to Heaven: the Nine Habits of Maximum Happiness. For example, if you value the environment, do you mind your carbon footprint? Or if family is important, do you make time for them? Figure out what’s important and live your life accordingly.
2. You’ve Embraced Living In The Moment
You’re fully awake and aware, and concentrate your energies on enjoying the present, rather than worrying about the past or the future. “All we have is right now,” says Michelle Keeley, an executive leadership coach with Fruition Strategies, “and life is just made up of a series of moments.” Enjoy them.
3. You Express Gratitude Regularly
Being grateful for the things you have—and sharing that gratitude—will lead to feelings of satisfaction and happiness. “When you’re performing an act of kindness or giving someone a compliment, you can actually feel an energy shift in your body,” says Todd Keeley, Michelle’s brother and business partner. Seek that feeling out more often.

Ernest Hemingway - The Old Man and The Sea (download pdf novel)
Here, for a change, is a fish tale that actually does honor to the author. In fact The Old Man and the Sea revived Ernest Hemingway's career, which was foundering under the weight of such postwar stinkers as Across the River and into the Trees. It also led directly to his receipt of the Nobel Prize in 1954 (an award Hemingway gladly accepted, despite his earlier observation that "no son of a bitch that ever won the Nobel Prize ever wrote anything worth reading afterwards"). A half century later, it's still easy to see why. This tale of an aged Cuban fisherman going head-to-head (or hand-to-fin) with a magnificent marlin encapsulates Hemingway's favorite motifs of physical and moral challenge. Yet Santiago is too old and infirm to partake of the gun-toting machismo that disfigured much of the author's later work: "The brown blotches of the benevolent skin cancer the sun brings from its reflection on the tropic sea were on his cheeks. The blotches ran well down the sides of his face and his hands had the deep-creased scars from handling heavy fish on the cords." Hemingway's style, too, reverts to those superb snapshots of perception that won him his initial fame:
Just before it was dark, as they passed a great island of Sargasso weed that heaved and swung in the light sea as though the ocean were making love with something under a yellow blanket, his small line was taken by a dolphin. He saw it first when it jumped in the air, true gold in the last of the sun and bending and flapping wildly in the air.
